FIAPO's board and staff bring together a vast range of understanding and skill to the federation. The board members are placed by a combination of member-organisation-based election and board selection. Executive staff hired by the board bring a range of experience in areas such as community development, education and outreach, policy work, communications and public engagement.
Norma Alvares, People for Animals Goa, Padma Shri Awardee
Norma Alvares is an advocate of the Bombay High Court and an activist and campaigner on social and environmental issues of public concern, especially in her home state of Goa. Over the past two decades, she has argued, pro bono, over a hundred public interest litigation cases, tirelessly taking up issues concerning environment pollution, animal rights, and womens' issues. She was instrumental in obtaining judicial orders banning the killing of stray dogs and the cruel sport of bullfighting in Goa. During the mid-nineties, she started the Goa branch of People for Animals. She is also a member of the Animal Welfare Board of India since the year 2000 and has also served as a member of the Committee for the Purpose of Supervision and Control of Experiments on Animals for three terms. In 2002, Norma was awarded the Padma Shri for her work for the protection of animals and the environment.
Abodh Aras, Welfare of Stray Dogs
Abodh Aras is the Chief Executive Officer of The Welfare Of Stray Dogs (WSD). He is an MBA in Marketing and a graduate in Hotel Management. Abodh has worked in the corporate sector with companies like DHL Worldwide Express, managing customer services and sales. His passion for animals led him to quit the corporate sector and join WSD in 2000 where he volunteered since 1995. He is also a co-opted member of The Animal Welfare Board Of India
Anjali Gopalan, NAZ Foundation
A Human Rights and Animal Rights activist, Anjali Gopalan is founder and executive director of The Naz Foundation (India) Trust, an NGO dedicated to the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic in India, mainly focused on women and children. Anjali began working on issues related to HIV/AIDS and marginalized communities in the United States. In 2012, Time magazine placed her in its list of the 100 most influential people in the world and in March 2007, Anjali was honored as one of nine Woman Achievers by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. In 2013, Anjali was awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur `Knight in the order of the legions of Honor'- the highest civilian award from France.
D.R. Mehta, Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (Jaipur Foot), Padma Bhushan Awardee
A former Chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India, D.R. Mehta is the founder and chief patron of the world’s largest organization for the handicapped– Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS). He is a recipient of one of India’s highest civilian awards, Padma Bhushan, for his contributions to the world-renowned Jaipur Foot.
Mofatraj P. Munot, Maharashtra Chamber at Housing Industry
Mofatraj P. Munot serves as President of Maharashtra Chamber at Housing Industry (MCHI). He is Founder, Promoter and Chairman of Kalpataru Group with five decades of experience in the field of real estate and property development, civil contracting and other industries. He also founded Kalpataru Power Transmission Ltd. He served as the Managing Director at Caprihans India Ltd. from 1992 to 1997. He is also well-known for his philanthropy.
Shakuntala Majumdar, Thane SPCA
Shakuntala Majumdar is a veteran animal rights activist and the President of Thane SPCA. Having worked for alleviating the suffering of animals for more than 20 years, she is also the member of many statutory bodies to monitor animal welfare in the country. Her in depth knowledge of Animal Welfare Laws has earned her respect and goodwill in the country’s Animal Welfare Environment. Most recently, she was awarded with the Nari Shakti Puraskar, in recognition of her stellar contribution to animal protection.
Vasanthi Vadi, People for Animals, Hyderabad
Vasanthi Vadi is an independent businesswoman running her own company, Win Win distributors. She serves as Secretary for the People for Animals (PFA), Hyderabad Chapter, and through her work with PFA as well as Blue Cross of Hyderabad, she has made an invaluable contribution to the cause of animal protection in the state
A USA-based lawyer by profession, Dan has been involved with the vegetarian and vegan outreach movement in the United States since 2006, and has been a supporter of FIAPO since 2012. He has worked with many animal welfare groups in USA including the Humane Society of the United States, Compassion Over Killing, Vegan Outreach, Mercy for Animals, and the Washington Animal Rescue League.
Erika Abrams, Animal Aid Charitable Trust
Erika Abrams is a co-founder of FIAPO. She is also the co-founder of Animal Aid Charitable Trust, one of India’s busiest animal rescue centers and sanctuaries, located in Udaipur where she has lived since 1999. She is a regular contributor to FIAPO's bi-monthly commentary.
Sudhir Amembal , Amembal & Associates
Sudhir P. Amembal is Chairman and CEO of Amembal & Associates, one of the world's most highly respected training and consulting firms in the field of international equipment leasing. He has been an advocate for and financial contributor to animal welfare and rights since 1974. He has served as the President of several animal welfare organizations, including the Humane Society of Utah, Wasatch Humane, The Animals Voice, and Psychologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Whilst living in Mexico, he co-founded Amigos de Animales in San Miguel de Allende. He also offers pro bono strategic consultancy to animal protection organisations, via Animal Advisory.
Timmie Kumar, Help in Suffering
Timmie Kumar graduated from J.J. School of Arts- Mumbai with specialization in Interior Designing in 1979. She is very passionate about animals since childhood and started working with “Help in Suffering”an animal NGO in Jaipur as a volunteer 12 years ago. She took over as a Managing Trustee of HIS in 2002, becoming the first Indian lady to do so. HIS is responsible in making Jaipur free of Rabies. Under her leadership HIS was able to open its second shelter in Bassi known as Camel Rescue Center (CRC) in April’2011 for treatment of camels. HIS and CRC conduct several free treatment camps organized at different locations in and around Jaipur like Pushkar Fair, Luniawas Donkey Fair etc.

Varda serves as a Director for FIAPO, and is passionate about empowering grassroots animal protection and encouraging collectives and collaboration. She has extensive experience of working with activists and organisations in both India and Scotland. She worked for animal rights in Scotland, setting up the largest collective for grassroots activism and helping others kick-start movements in their own local communities. Varda also has wide experience in outreach and she has used that extensively to engage with communities and organise public campaigns. As a communicator, for several years she worked on digital media for both national and local charities in Scotland. Varda has also worked in areas of social enterprises and international development and has been trained in cognitive science, philosophy, computer science and bioinformatics.
Arpan has worked as a director for FIAPO since its inception. He holds degrees in Economics and Social Work and has worked extensively in the areas of grassroots conservation action, livelihoods, animal welfare and policy. He has researched conservation management in India as well as consulted with agencies such as the UNDP, the GEF and World Bank on formulating and evaluating biodiversity conservation programmes, linking conservation and livelihoods and creating incentives for conservation. Early in his career, he worked with TRAFFIC India on programmes to curb illegal wildlife trade and enhance the capacity of enforcement agencies towards this end. He also has several years of experience in leading grassroots wildlife conservation efforts in central and north east India. Arpan has also served on planning commission working groups for the 11th five year plan on animal welfare, eco-tourism and wildlife conservation.

Prashanth is an ecologist by training and has worked in the field of human animal conflict and people’s dependence on protected areas. Over the last two years, he has actively enabled implementation of state laws to prevent abuse of animals in circuses. As part of FIAPO’s End Circus Suffering Campaign, Prashanth has helped secure the release of more than 160 circus animals. The campaign has also been successful in mobilizing 43 organisations and more than 110 activists across 16 states to take action on circuses using animals illegally. Information from such actions has been collated into a dossier ratified by all members of the Federation, with a strong recommendation for ban on use of all animals from circuses.

Shweta spearheads the Living Free Campaign – FIAPO’s outreach and advocacy programme run in over 20 cities across India. Pushing for mass vegan advocacy through time tested and innovative methods of campaigning, she works closely with grassroots activists – building capacity and inspiring change for farm animals. In the past one year, she has successfully planned and executed 7 national campaigns in over 20 cities in India, been a speaker at the Regional Bootcamps and has travelled across 12 cities during the Compassion Cruisade- a 10 week leafleting tour of India. At FIAPO she has gained experience working on the issue of farmed animals, events, campaigns, volunteer management and communication.
Having a Masters in Environmental Science from Panjab University, Jairoop has volunteered regularly and interned with People for Animals Chandigarh. From here she moved on to research by joining the Centre for Wildlife Studies and Wildlife Conservation Society, working on human- leopard interactions in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. She has always been fond of animals and has been working towards their betterment in whichever way possible.

Previously working for Prime Focus Ltd. his stint at FIAPO with the Gadhimai festival turned him into a true advocate for animals.

Swati Ballani is a Campaign Assistant in FIAPO and looks after the project in Varanasi. She has done her MBA in HR and has 10 years of experience in training soft skills, voice and accent. She has previously worked with Hyatt, Reliance and Pogo Channel (M.A.D live) and has been serving the animal welfare sector from the past last 7 years. She has volunteered with World For All in Mumbai and with Frendicoes in Delhi.
