Mayana Kollai festival celebrated

Salem: Mayana Kollai festival was celebrated in a grand and colorful manner here on Wednesday. Thousands of devotees participated in the festival and sacrificed animals like chickens and goats to please goddess Angalamman.

Mayana Kollai is the main festival celebrated in the district to worship goddess Angalamman. The festival is usually celebrated on the ‘new moon’ day in the Tamil month of Maasi.

On Wednesday, thousands of devotees thronged the Johnsonpet area in the city with Amman deity idols. Dressed in fancy attires, they danced on the streets. As more than 100 women, whose prayers were fulfilled in the last year’s puja, lay on road, the devotes, who were dressed like deities, made their way through them.

The processions, which started from various parts of the city, finally ended on Kakkayan burial ground at Johnsonpet, where they performed rituals and paid their respects to their forefathers.
