Role Summary
This role is part of an exciting new initiative to reframe the way media writes about animal welfare and its interconnections with health, environment, climate, food, governance, and economics.
As Media Outreach Manager, you’ll be IKC’s bridge between strategy and execution — owning the Media Outreach and Capacity plan end to end.
You will work with our PR agency and with internal teams to turn strategy into tangible outcomes: high-quality editorial placements and op-eds, durable journalist partnerships, well-run bootcamps and fellowships, a ready-to-deploy crisis response, and a living Journalist Resource Hub.
As the single point of accountability, you’ll guard timelines, quality, and KPIs, while ensuring our message is accurate, consistent. You’ll cultivate newsroom relationships, track narrative impact, and convert campaign goals into measurable visibility and influence.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic PR & Media Leadership
Co-create IKC’s media outreach strategy working with the PR agency and the internal team, and translate it into actionable media deliverables
Oversee the monthly media plan - press releases, op-eds, story placements, influencer collaborations
Work with the agency to align tone, accuracy, and alignment with IKC’s communication guardrails and factual grounding
Ensure all communication reinforces IKC’s key messages: animal welfare as public welfare, climate relevance, and corporate responsibility
Identify high-impact PR opportunities - policy summits, cultural events, media roundtables, awards, etc.
Track relevant journalists, prominent voices relevant to IKC – their writing/ publishing, and event participation, and synergise IKC with their engagements
2. Agency Coordination & Performance Management
Be the single point of contact for the PR agency and all PR deliverables
Translate quarterly goals into agency briefs, workplans, and weekly sprints
Track performance against agreed KPIs
Share responsibility for the entire flow of media stories, from idea to publication: organic coverage, planned series/partnerships, authored op-eds, interviews/quotes, and PRs
Review and approve content before release - ensuring credibility, sensitivity, and consistency with IKC’s positioning
Bring in experts for angle development and fact-checking; secure expert spokespeople; review all copy for accuracy, tone, and narrative alignment
Maintain monthly performance dashboards and reports to leadership
3. Thought Leadership & Internal Communication
Put in place the ecosystem for generating op-eds
Curate content pipelines for LinkedIn, panel discussions, and public engagements
Build IKC’s profile as a credible, future-forward thought leader in humane development
Grow into a role that supports IKC leadership and partners in drafting op-eds, quotes, and speaking points
4. Media Relationship Building
Maintain an editor/reporter map across national/regional desks (climate, health/AMR, food systems, rural economy, governance)
Build and nurture direct relationships with key journalists across national, business, environment, and youth media, spanning traditional print, digital, and new media
Facilitate thought-leadership opportunities for IKC leaders in major media outlets
5. Partnerships & Ecosystem Building
Convene a small advisory group of senior journalists for mentorship, newsroom intros, and editorial guidance
Coordinate with member organisations to surface field stories, data, and subject-matter experts
Support IKC partners and the PR agency to structure and sign partnerships with journalism schools and media networks for co-designed modules, internships, or projects
6. Narrative and data
Structure the available research into clear fact sheets and data points for journalists
Work with the internal team to identify gaps in data and advise on reports and studies to be commissioned
Own the build of a lightweight, searchable hub for factsheets, data visualisations, expert directory, story leads, and past coverage
Be prepared to update the hub with data-based hot takes on emerging stories
Manage the developer/vendor; oversee IA, content QA, and launch milestones; ensure accessibility and regular content refresh
In time, become the go-to person for information – knowledge within the movement, data and research available, etc.
7. Capacity Building: Bootcamps & Fellowships
Support the agency to conduct four journalist bootcamps in a year
Help draft the fellowship framework (objectives, deliverables, editorial support, stipends), timelines, and selection rubrics; prepare for roll-out with universities/media houses
8. Monitoring, Insights & Crisis Preparedness
Establish media monitoring dashboards (volume, outlets, regions, themes, tone); produce monthly insights and learning notes.
Draft (with the help of the agency) and maintain a crisis playbook
Work with the agency to identify misinformation and manage narrative risks
Advise leadership on media sensitivities, cultural nuances, and tone of response during contentious moments
9. Campaign Amplification & Storytelling
Collaborate with content and digital teams to integrate PR storytelling with online engagement
Spot emerging social or media trends to create “earned moment” opportunities
Ensure that all PR storytelling ties back to the “More Than Just a Number” movement, driving awareness, empathy, and participation of the younger generation
Essential Skills & Experience
8-10 years of experience in PR, media relations, or communications
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (regional languages a plus)
Understanding of India’s media landscape — national, regional, digital, and youth platforms
Experience in managing or collaborating with PR agencies
Experience or deep interest in animal welfare, sustainability, or climate issues
