Crimes against animals have been on the rise, and as the newspapers are flooded with cruelties against animals, it’s time we pay attention to the heinous crimes that are often overlooked by the authorities. A pregnant goat in Haryana was recently gang-raped by eight men, and left for dead. No living being deserves to be treated in such a cruel way, and the perpetrators of the crime must get punished. We must fight strongly for equal right for animals, so that they can live their lives with respect and dignity.

Let’s stand up—not only for this one animal—but for all other animals who are being tortured and suppressed. It’s time we became kinder and more humane to one and all.

Justice for Animals

Dear Sir,

I write to you on behalf of the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO). FIAPO is India's apex animal rights agency. As the collective voice of the animal rights movement in India, FIAPO is the catalyst that protects the interests of animals on local and national levels—through education, research, lobbying, mobilization, training, and direct action. It has 102 members and over 200 supporter organizations across the country.

This letter is in reference to the news “Pregnant goat dies after eight men gang-raped it in Haryana (https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/pregnant-goat-dies-after-8-men-gang-raped-it-in-haryana-1299168-2018-07-28),” dated 28th July in India Today, referencing the brutal and fatal gang rape of a pregnant goat.

Sexual abuse of animals is on the rise and is a subject of considerable concern nowadays. Even though the slaughter and dairy industries have sexually abused animals to generate output, some humans have taken the level of sexual abuse and violation to a different level. It is not the first time that a goat has been sexually abused by humans. In Perumbavoor, Kerala, Police have found a video of the accused sexually abusing a goat and mutilating its private parts. In this specific instant, another seven year old, pregnant goat became the target of eight drunken men, who brutally gang-raped her—which eventually led to her death—in Mewat, Haryana.

This incident is strictly against the Indian Laws:

• According to Section 377, Unnatural Offences, Indian Penal Code, 1860; whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman, or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable for a fine.

• As per section 429, Mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc., of any value or any animal of the value of fifty rupees, Indian Penal Code, 1960; whoever commits mischief by killing, poisoning, maiming, or rendering useless, any elephant, camel, horse, mule, buffalo, bull, cow, or ox, whatever may be the value thereof, or any other animal of the value of fifty rupees or upwards, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to five years, or with fine, or both.

•As per Section 428, Mischief by killing or maiming animals of the value of ten rupees, Indian Penal Code, 1860; whoever commits mischief by killing, poisoning, maiming or rendering useless any animals or the value of then rupees or upwards, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with a fine or both.

Therefore, we urge you to fast track the process for the FIR filed by Aslup Khan and take immediate action against the culprits. Any society that countenances animal abuse condones the abandonment of moral principles when convenient.
Animals deserve to live their lives free from suffering and exploitation. They have equal rights to live with respect and dignity. We strongly recommend that the accused should get the strictest punishment under the sections mentioned above.
Looking forward to a swift reaction.

Regards,
